Campers visiting the Birch Campground in Duck Mountain Provincial Park will soon be able to use a new washroom facility next summer as investments continue to be made in Saskatchewan's Provincial Parks.
G. Hahn Contracting Limited of Fort Qu'Appelle has been awarded a $673,171 contract to build a new service centre in the campground. Campground service centres feature flush toilets, sinks and showers.
The existing service centre in the campground is old and it is no longer feasible to spend money upgrading it. It is also too small to meet the current demand.
"Clean, modern washroom facilities are an important feature of our provincial parks," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "They help improve the overall recreational experience of our visitors and help to make our provincial parks even more inviting places to camp."
Work on the Birch Campground service centre is expected to begin this September with a February 15, 2011 completion date.
Along with replacing or upgrading some service centres, the ministry is also adding new electrical service to 1,000 existing provincial park campsites, 600 of those sites are available for campers to use this summer. The ministry is in the process of tendering contracts for adding electrical service to an additional 248 campsites in three provincial parks. Those sites will be ready for campers to use in the 2011 camping season. The ministry is also upgrading some existing electrical service and upgrading or replacing boat launches, picnic tables and barbeques. Since 2008, government has spent more than $16.2 million to improve the facilities and infrastructure in our provincial parks.
A public tender for the contract to replace the service centre in the Birch Campground was issued on May 22, 2010.
