Continued rainfall and flooding across Southern Saskatchewan has prompted Saskatchewan Watershed Authority (SWA) to offer free testing of private wells which are used as a sources of drinking water and have potentially been impacted by flooding anywhere in the province. As feared, flooding has resulted in contamination of some wells.
"The Watershed Authority has been testing private drinking water wells in the flood-stricken Swift Current - Maple Creek area since June 28," Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Dustin Duncan said. "This poses a significant health risk to people drinking from those wells."
"We are therefore offering this free testing to anyone whose private well was potentially impacted by flooding to ensure residents can make informed decisions relating to their drinking water," Duncan said.
Approximately 50 per cent of wells tested following the Maple Creek flood failed to meet drinking water standards for Nitrate, E. Coli or Total Coliforms.
Individuals eligible for no-cost testing must be using the well water as a source of drinking water and suspect the water source has been impacted by heavy rain or flooding.
People who think their well may have been contaminated can call the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority at 1-866-837-8420 (1-866-TEST H2O) to find out if they are eligible for testing. The free testing will be available from July 13-23, 2010.
If you suspect your well water has been contaminated, it is suggested that an alternate water source that has been deemed safe should be used until your water has been tested.
The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority leads the management of the province's water resources to ensure safe drinking water sources and reliable water supplies.
