The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport continues to upgrade the services available to provincial park visitors.
Contracts have been awarded to two companies to add electrical service to campsites at Danielson, Douglas and Echo Valley Provincial Parks.
"We are pleased to continue offering our park visitors improved services," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "This work is part of your government's overall plan to improve our outstanding provincial parks and will help ensure that our park visitors have the opportunity to experience the best our provincial parks have to offer."
Simonson Electric Ltd. of Outlook has been awarded a $185,500 contract to add electrical service to 51 campsites at Douglas Provincial Park. The company was also awarded a $442,677 contract to add electrical service to 123 campsites at Echo Valley Provincial Park. Mid City Electric Ltd. of Air Ronge has been awarded a $163,600 contract to add electrical service to 44 campsites at Danielson Provincial Park. Public tenders for the work were issued on May 8, 2010. The 218 campsites will be available for campers to use in the summer of 2011.
A contract of $267,298 has been awarded to Livewire Electric Ltd. of Shellbrook to improve the existing electrical service to 69 campsites at the Rainbow Campground at Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. These sites will also be available for campers to use next summer.
The existing electrical service is being challenged by the demands put on it by modern, large, recreational vehicles. The upgraded electrical service will meet those demands. The system will also be brought up to current Canadian Electrical Code guidelines. These standards must be met in the portion of any existing electrical system that is upgraded.
Adding electrical service to campsites is among the many investments visitors to our provincial parks will see. Since 2008, government has spent more than $16.2 million to improve the facilities and infrastructure in our provincial parks. It includes adding electrical service to 1,000 campsites. This year campers will be able to use 600 of those new sites. Along with adding and upgrading electrical service, the ministry is also replacing or upgrading some service centres, boat launches, potable water systems and is replacing some picnic tables and barbeques.
