Saskatchewan employers and job seekers fuelled record-breaking activity on the province's job-matching website, SaskJobs.ca. More than 6.9 million visitors browsed 102,000 job opportunities posted to the site in 2009 - an increase of more than 60 per cent over the 2008 total of 4.3 million visits.
"Despite the global economic upheaval in 2009, Saskatchewan remains in a position of strength when compared to other jurisdictions," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "Through the worst of the storm, jobs have been created, our population has grown and interest in opportunities in our province has been high."
Of the 6.9 million visits to SaskJobs:
- 5.5 million came from inside Saskatchewan;
- 1.2 million came from other Canadian provinces and territories (including 456,000 from Ontario);
- 12,500 visits came from i-phones; and
- 276,000 came from outside Canada.
"While we saw record interest in SaskJobs last year, we know that some of that activity is related to layoffs and economic challenges within our own borders," Norris said. "SaskJobs is a vital tool for our rapid response teams and for good reason - with more than 100,000 jobs posted in 2009, the site is a key resource for workers."
Norris noted that with more than 4,000 vacancies posted today on SaskJobs, opportunities are still available.
