CALVERT CONSTRUCTION LTD. PLEADS GUILTY TO OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY VIOLATION

Released on February 19, 2010

Calvert Construction Ltd. pled guilty to one charge and was fined $480 for violating Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations.

The charge was for failing to ensure workers use a fall protection system where a worker may fall three metres or more, contravening section 116(2)(a) of the OHS Regulations. A second charge was stayed.

This charge was the result of a proactive routine inspection by Occupational Health Officers, who inspect workplaces around Saskatchewan throughout the year.

Occupational Health and Safety has a zero tolerance approach to non-compliance or violations of fall protection legislation.

Of the approximately 4,000 workplace inspections that Occupational Health and Safety conducts annually, about 39 per cent have been on construction sites this year. OHS also provides training to more than 4,000 employer and worker representatives each year on their safety responsibilities.
