Upgrades being made to Saskatchewan Government Insurance's (SGI) computer system will mean increased convenience and options for its customers.
In order to implement the upgrades, SGI's system will be shut down from the evening of Feb. 12 through Feb. 17. As issuers will only be able to do transactions manually while the system is down, some issuers may choose to adjust their office hours or close altogether. A list of issuer availability can be found at www.sgi.sk.ca.
Although there is some temporary inconvenience, customers will see long-term benefits from the new computer system.
"These system changes will mean SGI is able to move forward on important new services for our customers," Minister responsible for SGI June Draude said. "Customers will now have the option to register their vehicles for shorter time periods. This is something they have asked for, and now we'll be able to meet that request."
Following the system implementation, customers will have the option of registering their vehicle for any term ranging from 28 days to 365 days. The current minimum registration period is 89 days.
Currently customers must purchase multiple 24-hour permits if they need a permit for more than a day. This upgrade will also allow SGI to introduce a new eight-day permit that will be particularly useful for customers needing a temporary vehicle registration for reasons such as moving their vehicles for repairs or obtaining safety inspections.
The new system will also include changes to the AutoPay monthly payment program.
"AutoPay customers will no longer need to renew their vehicle registrations and replace their licence plate stickers each year," Draude said. "As long as they declare their eligibility for Saskatchewan registration annually and their account remains in good standing, their registration will remain valid. They'll be given a ‘Continuous' sticker and a continuous registration certificate to reflect the new continuous registration term."
SGI cautions that there may be some delays following implementation of the new computer system as SGI works through any issues, and staff and issuers become accustomed to the new system.
"We'd like to thank all of our customers, motor licence issuers and employees for their patience and co-operation as we work to provide improved service," Draude said.
