The Saskatchewan Public Service Commission is accepting applications for student employment in the public service.
One of the largest employers of students in the province, the public service provides positions in Ministries such as Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport; Highways and Infrastructure and Environment.
"I am pleased we can offer Saskatchewan students rewarding employment to offset the costs of their education," Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission June Draude said. "There are a variety of opportunities available for students, and I encourage students to submit their applications quickly so they can be considered for a range of positions."
Last summer, the public service employed more than 500 students. Previously, summer opportunities in the public service have included jobs in research, geology, administration, park and highway maintenance and social services.
The majority of student hiring takes place in late March and throughout April, and most students are hired from May to the end of August. However, there are also opportunities available throughout the year, including co-op work terms, student jobs and internships.
"Having students in our workplace not only offers new and fresh perspectives, but also prepares these young employees to transition to careers in the public service," Draude said.
Students apply online through the Career Centre at www.careers.gov.sk.ca/studentjobs. Applications are matched to job competitions based on students' qualifications, as well as their choices of location and availability. The list of names for a position is then forwarded to hiring managers to consider for assessment and interviews.
Students can also be rehired from the previous year, provided they go back to similar jobs. This allows them to increase their experience and build networks, which may help them compete for future public service jobs.
Co-op student Kelly Jardine was hired by the Public Service Commission as a Student Referrals Administrator for the summer. A full-time anthropology student at the University of Regina, Kelly is responsible for referring student applications to hiring managers.
"When students are submitting their applications, I encourage them to consider the skills and abilities they can bring to the public service," Jardine said. "There are lots of great opportunities for excellent work experience, and having a great application will encourage managers to consider a student for one of those positions."
Jardine will be assisting hiring managers in finding students, as well as working one-on-one with students to help them find a summer job.
"I am excited to have the opportunity to help students like me find rewarding employment for the summer," Jardine said.
