MAKING IT EASIER TO PLAN THE CAMPING SEASON

Released on February 8, 2010

This year it is a bit easier for people wanting a seasonal campsite in a provincial park to plan their summer. The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport has changed the draw date of the Seasonal Camping Program.

The Seasonal Camping Program sets aside a limited number of campsites in the park system for those who wish to enjoy the full camping season on the same site.

This change to the Seasonal Camping Program was previously announced as part of enhancements made to the ministry's camping program for 2010 and campers are now being reminded of the upcoming application deadline.

As demand for seasonal sites exceeds supply, the ministry allocates sites using a lottery-style draw system. The draw used to be held in late April but this year the draw will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 which is the last Tuesday of the month. The deadline for applications is one week earlier on Tuesday, February 16, 2010.

"As a camper, I know how exciting it is to plan your summer holidays," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "This is a great change that I am confident campers will appreciate. Holding the draw in late April meant campers had little time to plan their vacations. This way they will know two months earlier whether they have been drawn for a seasonal campsite and will be able to better prepare for their vacation in a Saskatchewan provincial park."

A limited number of campsites in twenty-one provincial parks and recreation sites are included in the Seasonal Camping Program. Those applying for a seasonal site must apply directly to the provincial park or recreation site they wish to camp in. The draws are then made within the park on February 23. Those wishing to attend a draw should contact the desired park to get the location of the draw.
