SASKATCHEWAN WORKERS SEE THE LARGEST EARNINGS INCREASE IN CANADA

Released on December 23, 2010

A 7.7 per cent jump in average weekly earnings, the largest increase in Canada, has lifted Saskatchewan above the national average for the first time.

Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings were $875.47, the third highest in the country after Alberta ($1,012.54) and Ontario ($889.84), and ahead of the national average of $863.33.

"Yesterday, we celebrated a new all-time population record in Saskatchewan and the news today highlights that the benefits of our economic growth are being shared with increasing numbers of people across the province," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "Saskatchewan workers are seeing the benefits of an economy that continues to create high-quality jobs."

Saskatchewan's 7.7 average earnings increase for October far exceeds the province's Consumer Price Index of 2.1 per cent for the same month. As a result, workers have seen a "real increase" of 5.6 per cent as compared to a year ago.

"Today's numbers are more good news for our people and our economy heading into the holiday season," Norris said. "With Saskatchewan expected to lead the nation in economic growth in the new year, there is reason for continued optimism."

Norris also noted the 6,400 jobs currently available on www.saskjobs.ca as a sign that quality opportunities are still available in Saskatchewan.
