KNOW BEFORE YOU GO THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Released on December 21, 2010

Travellers preparing to head out on the highway to visit family and friends this holiday season are reminded to "know before you go" by checking the Highway Hotline for the latest road conditions.

"The best gift you can give yourself is a safe journey, and it all starts with checking the Highway Hotline," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "By checking road conditions you know what you're heading into and can plan your trip accordingly. It's a must, especially considering the severe weather we've experienced so far this winter."

The Highway Hotline provides the public with up-to-date road conditions and highway driving information. This service is provided 7-days a week, 24-hours a day, during the winter months. Conditions shown are those that were current at the last report, but they can and do change rapidly, so motorists are encouraged to check back frequently.

"The interactive map is our most popular tool, because it basically provides all your information needs," Reiter said. "It will show you the latest conditions province-wide or in more detail by region, what time the conditions were reported, the latest weather updates from Environment Canada and even what construction is taking place on our highway network."

• To view the highway conditions map or see a text report go to www.highways.gov.sk.ca
• For mobile devices go to http://roadinfo.telenium.ca/mobile.html

Phone numbers include:
• SaskTel Cellular Network: *ROAD
• Toll free across Canada: 1-888-335-7623
• Regina and area: 306-787-7623
• Saskatoon and area: 306-933-8333

Motorists are reminded to stay back and stay safe when following a snowplow at work. The snowplow can become obscured by the whiteout created in its wake; slow down, stay back and drive with extreme caution. The plow will pull over approximately every 10 km to allow vehicles to pass. Remember to slow to 60 km when passing a plow parked on the side of the highway or working with lights in operation.
