PROVINCE RELEASES 2010 EDUCATION INDICATORS REPORT

The Government of Saskatchewan has released the 2010 Saskatchewan Education Indicators Report. This report is released annually to provide information to parents, teachers, schools and school divisions on student learning and achievement in the province.

"Improving student achievement is something the education sector has been working on together," Education Minister Donna Harpauer said. "The information in this report is intended to support Saskatchewan schools in their goal setting to support continuous improvement - improvement based on how well students are learning in the classroom."

The report looks at Saskatchewan as a whole, focusing on four priorities areas: higher literacy and achievement, equitable opportunities, smooth transitions and accountability and governance.

Highlights include:

  • The Saskatchewan Scene shows a growing overall population, a steady student population, an increasing young Aboriginal population and a recent increase in immigrant youth. 
  • Higher Literacy and Achievement shows steady Grade 12 graduation rates and steady average marks but also shows the need to bring student performance on national and international assessments to meet or exceed the Canadian average.
  • Equitable Opportunities shows improvement in students' knowledge of treaties, an increase in French Immersion and fransaskois enrolments and improved compliance on Personal Program Plans and the Monitoring Checklist for students requiring intensive supports.
  • Smooth Transitions shows students' transition rates from one grade to the next, an improvement in persistence rates in achieving Grade 12 graduation for Aboriginal students and that Saskatchewan youth not in education are likely to be employed.
  • Accountability and Governance includes detailed school division expenditures and decreasing student-to-teacher ratios.

"We have an opportunity to build on the good work schools already do in Saskatchewan to prepare our students for success both in school and in life," Harpauer said. "And that means looking at how can continue to improve education outcomes for all students here in Saskatchewan."
