SGI and the Insurance Institute of Saskatchewan will help prepare students for careers in insurance by supporting SIAST's new Business Insurance Diploma program.
SGI has committed to employing students participating in, and graduating from, the Business Insurance Diploma program. The program will begin in September 2011, and was recently announced by SIAST.
"The Business Insurance Diploma program will help attract young people to careers in the Saskatchewan insurance industry," Minister responsible for SGI Tim McMillan said. "By offering work experience opportunities, SGI hopes students will successfully transition into permanent roles at SGI or within the industry and ultimately, stay in Saskatchewan."
McMillan noted that the insurance industry offers opportunities in areas students may not expect, like risk management, appraisals and loss prevention.
"Rewarding and challenging careers await for innovative thinkers with keen analytical skills who enjoy problem-solving and working with people," McMillan said.
SGI will support the new program by establishing six work terms after the second semester, and five 12-month internships upon graduation. SGI will also offer four $2,500 SIAST scholarships for Business Insurance students as an added incentive for students to enter the program.
"SGI is the largest employer in the insurance industry operating in the province," Insurance Institute of Saskatchewan President Colin Warnecke said. "Their support will help attract prospective students to the program."
To help recruit people into the insurance industry, SGI also offers scholarships for students studying in insurance-related fields at the University of Regina, the University of Calgary and Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Alberta.
