Today, Government Services Minister Laura Ross joined representatives from Ranch Ehrlo Society and Regina Public Schools, on behalf of Education Minister Donna Harpauer, to celebrate the opening of 135 licensed child care spaces located in four public schools in Regina.
"Increasing the number of licensed child care spaces is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan, and we have made a record investment in early learning and child care over the last three years," Ross said. "These new spaces are part of that investment, and mean 135 more Regina families now have access to high quality child care."
Thirty new spaces are open each at Ehrlo Early Learning Centre Imperial, Ehrlo Early Learning Centre Ruth Pawson and Ehrlo Early Learning Centre Gladys McDonald. Forty-five new spaces are open at Ehrlo Early Learning Centre Wilfred Walker.
"The Ranch Ehrlo Society, in partnership with Regina Public Schools, has been providing quality early learning and child care since October 2002," Vice-President of Administration and Quality Improvement Carole Bryant said. "We're pleased to be able to expand our program, which like all programs at Ranch Ehrlo Society, are based on the philosophy that children need social nourishment to develop as healthy individuals. Having new state-of-the-art facilities certainly helps us to deliver this quality programming."
"Regina Public Schools understands the importance of early childhood learning experiences," Regina Public Schools Director of Education Don Hoium said. "We are pleased to partner with the Ministry of Education and Ranch Ehrlo in the establishment of these early learning centres in our schools."
The Government of Saskatchewan provided more than $1.8 million for the four new child care centres, including more than $1.32 million for school-based capital renovations and $527,500 for space development, early learning materials, and equipment and furniture.
Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has allocated funding for 2,935 new child care spaces to communities across the province, representing a 30 per cent increase.
