Today Provincial Military Liaison D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert announced three Saskatchewan Cadet Corps/Squadrons to be recognized for their excellence within their communities.
"The cadet program is one of the largest and oldest youth programs in Canada," Huyghebaert said. "For over a hundred years Saskatchewan's cadet program has served to teach our youth the core values of loyalty, professionalism and integrity. I want to congratulate each of the recipients not only for their involvement within the community, but also for proudly participating in the most noble of traditions."
This year's recipients are:
- #45 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Jervis Bay, Saskatoon;
- #2293 The North Saskatchewan Regiment Army Cadet Corps, Saskatoon; and
- #41 Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron, Regina.
Formal recognition of the top Air Cadet squadron, Army Cadet Corps and Sea Cadet Corps was announced in 2009 to celebrate the history of the cadet program as well as the good work being carried out across the province by its members.
The recipients will be formally recognized for their contributions at presentation events to occur in the coming months.
Cadet Units are evaluated on a series of disciplines including community involvement and member participation. A selection committee comprised of Senior Officers from the north and south recommend top units with the final determination selected by their respective League Officials.
The Saskatchewan Cadet Program began in 1903 and includes 64 Sea, Army and Air corps and squadrons and over 2,300 cadets. The program accepts youth between the ages of 12 to 19, and teaches citizenship, personal discipline, as well as general military knowledge.
