PROVINCE INCREASES OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

Released on April 29, 2010

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister and Minister responsible for Immigration Rob Norris announced the establishment of Saskatchewan's International Education Council today. The council is mandated to enhance co-operation between various educational institutions regarding international student recruitment and the promotion of global citizenship.

"We want to make sure that Saskatchewan students have enhanced opportunities to compete and succeed in the global community and to ensure that students around the world are aware of the incredible opportunities our institutions afford," Norris said. "The council will also help to wrap a Saskatchewan flag around the various international endeavours being led by our educational institutions."

The International Education Council is composed of representatives from Saskatchewan secondary and post-secondary institutions that are actively involved in international education, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour. It will recommend strategies for institutions to collaborate in areas such as international student recruitment, study abroad opportunities for Saskatchewan students, and other efforts to further internationalize Saskatchewan's campuses.

The council held its inaugural meeting today and has endorsed changes to the student category of the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) that will help promote Saskatchewan as a destination of choice for international students who want to settle in the province. Under the new criteria, work that undergraduate and graduate students undertake in Saskatchewan during the course of their studies will count toward the SINP's work experience requirements.

"We believe the changes to the student category will make our institutions even more attractive to bright international students so that they, in turn, will bring new ideas and global networks to Saskatchewan," Norris said. "Last year, the SINP nominated 3,505 people for permanent residence in Saskatchewan and this change will provide another tool for our province to better welcome our new neighbours."

For more information about the change to the international student category of the SINP, please call the SINP at 306-798-7467 or visit www.saskimmigrationcanada.ca/student.
