GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN PROCLAIMS CULTURE WEEK

Released on April 20, 2010

Today, the Government of Saskatchewan proclaimed September 20 to 26, 2010 as Culture Week in Saskatchewan. This proclamation is in support of Culture Days, a Canada-wide initiative that aims to raise awareness of and encourage participation in cultural activities at the local and community level.

"I'm pleased we're able to support the national Culture Days initiative through this proclamation," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "I am asking communities across the province to join me and declare this week a local opportunity to support Culture Days. I also encourage organizations, institutions, schools and individuals to work together to plan events that celebrate Saskatchewan's healthy, vibrant culture.

"Celebrating our culture is going to shine a light on our great province and further demonstrate what is special about Saskatchewan."

Duncan joined with representatives from SaskCulture Inc. and the Saskatchewan Arts Board today for the national launch of Culture Days. Culture Days is a collaborative, volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the cultural life of their communities. The annual, concurrent Culture Days events across Canada will feature free hands-on, interactive activities that encourage the public to participate and discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators and designers in their community. Activities can be registered at www.culturedays.ca.

"Culture Days will help spread the word that a vibrant culture scene attracts talented and creative people, promotes business development and revitalizes our communities, making them destination points for citizens and tourists," Duncan said.

Culture Days helps implement Pride of Saskatchewan, the new provincial cultural policy, which promotes the importance of building understanding of and access to culture by ensuring people of all ages and abilities learn about and experience culture.
