DIVERSIFIED ELECTRIC LTD. PLEADS GUILTY TO OHS VIOLATIONS

Released on April 19, 2010

Diversified Electric Ltd. pled guilty to two charges under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and was fined a total of $22,400.

The company pled guilty to one charge for contravening section 465(5)(iii) of the regulations (failure to ensure that a worker used appropriate personal protective equipment while working close to an exposed energized electrical conductor) and was fined $15,000 plus a $6,000 victim fine surcharge. Diversified Electric Ltd. also pled guilty to one charge for contravening section 17(1)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure all work is sufficiently and competently supervised) and was fined $1,000 plus a $400 victim fine surcharge.

The charges follow an incident on July 31, 2008 when an employee was seriously burned by an arc flash explosion at a worksite in Saskatoon.

Occupational Health and Safety investigated this incident and concluded that the failure of the company to comply with certain provisions of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 contributed to the injury of the worker.

Occupational Health and Safety inspects approximately 4,000 workplaces annually and provides training to more than 4,000 employer and worker representatives each year on their safety responsibilities.
