Released on April 13, 2010
Joel Makon, owner of On Top Roofing and Exteriors pled guilty to one charge under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations and was fined a total of $840.
Makon pled guilty to one count of contravening section 116(2)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure workers use a fall protection system where a worker may fall three metres or more). Makon was fined $600, plus a $240 victim fine surcharge.
This charge was the result of a proactive routine inspection by Occupational Health Officers, who inspect workplaces around Saskatchewan throughout the year.
Occupational Health and Safety has a zero tolerance approach to non-compliance or violations of fall protection legislation.
Of the approximately 4,000 workplace inspections that Occupational Health and Safety conducts annually, about 39 per cent have been on construction sites this year. OHS also provides training to more than 4,000 employer and worker representatives each year on their safety responsibilities.
