SASKATCHEWAN WORKERS CONTINUE TO SEE HIGHER WAGES

Released on September 30, 2009

Saskatchewan workers saw their average earnings increase by 2.4 per cent in July 2009, compared to the same month last year - easily exceeding the national average of 1.6 per cent. Saskatchewan's average weekly wage is now $803.90, according to numbers released today by Statistics Canada.

"We have begun to see signs that the global economy is slowly recovering, and through the worst of it, Saskatchewan has remained the best place in Canada to weather the storm," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "We are starting the recovery with more people working, and earning more money than a year ago."

Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings were the second highest in Western Canada, ahead of Manitoba ($780.26) and British Columbia ($799.36). Among all provinces, Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings are fourth highest, following Alberta ($942.62), Ontario ($845.17), and Newfoundland and Labrador ($805.49).

Saskatchewan also recorded the second largest percentage increase of 1.1 per cent in the number of occupied payroll jobs in July 2009, compared to a year ago, well above the national average of -1.8 per cent.

Norris was also quick to note the effect the recession has had on some Saskatchewan employers and workers.

"We are acutely aware of those who have been affected by the recession, and we are responding," Norris said. "Our Canada-Saskatchewan Rapid Response Teams promote federal and provincial programs and services that can support training and career development of our workers - and with more than 6,100 vacancies on SaskJobs.ca today, opportunities are still available."
