A Habitat for Humanity partner family will achieve their dream of homeownership after receiving a key to their new house at a presentation to be held in Yorkton tomorrow. The affordable housing project was undertaken by the Yorkton chapter of Habitat for Humanity, with $50,000 in funding from the province to offset construction costs.
The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced on March 30 to assist Habitat for Humanity's Saskatchewan affiliates in providing 20 homes for lower-income Saskatchewan families in housing need. The homes will be constructed in Yorkton, Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Lloydminster.
"Like Habitat for Humanity and its partners, our government believes that everybody deserves to have a home that promotes health, dignity, security and independence," Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz said, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. "We are pleased to help Habitat for Humanity make the dream of homeownership come true for families and help them build a brighter future."
"It is enormously gratifying watching a dynamic and buoyant community come together to deliver affordable home ownership for a local family," Habitat for Humanity CEO Dennis Coutts said. "Thanks to Saskatchewan Housing Corporation's funding, this process will repeat itself many times across the province, and already, we are planning the second build in Yorkton."
The three-bedroom bi-level home is located at 221 Betts Avenue in Yorkton. The partner family contributed 500 hours of sweat equity in building their home.
