DEADLINE EXTENDED TO HELP FARMERS AND RANCHERS IN SOUTHWEST SASKATCHEWAN COPE WITH DROUGHT

Released on September 21, 2009

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are extending the project completion deadline for the 2008 Saskatchewan Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program (FRWIP).

The deadline to complete projects in the program has been extended from November 1, 2009, to November 1, 2010, to allow applicants more time to finish approved projects.

"Farmers know that this government always stands behind them and puts them first when making decisions about agriculture policy," said MP David Anderson (Cypress Hills-Grasslands) and Parliamentary Secretary for the Canadian Wheat Board, who made the announcement today on behalf of Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "This extension gives farmers a little more breathing room to complete the infrastructure projects they had applied for under the 2008 program and receive funding."

The 2008 FRWIP program was intended to help farmers, ranchers and RMs in Southwest Saskatchewan develop long-term water supplies to negate the effects of drought.

"It is important our programs are flexible to address the needs of farmers and ranchers," Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud said. "The FRWIP program has had tremendous uptake in Southwest Saskatchewan and the completion of these projects will benefit producers for years to come."

The federal and provincial governments are providing more than $29 million in funding for the 2008 FRWIP program for eligible projects such as wells, dugouts and pipelines.

The application deadline for this program was December 3, 2008, and no new applications are being accepted. However, producers are eligible to apply for the new province-wide FRWIP program, announced in April 2009.

The 2008 FRWIP program is cost shared under AgriRecovery, a framework under Growing Forward which enables governments to respond quickly to help farmers mitigate disasters and resume business.
