Provincial Secretary June Draude presented the community of Duck Lake with the Fransaskois Flag in recognition of their contributions to French language and culture in Saskatchewan.
"It is my honour to present the community of Duck Lake with the Fransaskois Flag on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan," Draude said. "The pioneering spirit of this community unified French settlers across the province, despite its vast geography."
Duck Lake was the home of the province's first weekly French-language newspaper, founded in 1910. This was followed by the establishment of the first provincial Francophone organization, known today as the Assemblée communautaire fransaskoise, in 1912.
"As a result of their leadership and efforts, Saskatchewan not only boasts about the historical contributions of Francophones, but about a vibrant and engaged present-day Francophone community who continue to support the growth of our province," Draude said.
The Fransaskois Flag was adopted as a provincial emblem in 2005 to recognize the status of French as one of Canada's official languages and acknowledge the heritage of Saskatchewan's Francophones and their significant contributions to the province.
A plaque was also presented to the community to commemorate the event. The flag and a commemorative plaque will be presented to a number of communities in the coming year as part of a provincial-wide recognition initiative.
Both the flag and plaque will be displayed outside the Duck Lake Regional Interpretive Centre in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan.
