PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES MEET IN EDMONTON TO DISCUSS SENIORS

Released on September 8, 2009

Legislative Secretary for Long-Term Care Initiatives Laura Ross will be in Edmonton, Alberta on Wednesday attending the annual meeting of Provincial, Territorial and Federal Ministers Responsible for Seniors.

Officials at the session will be discussing safety and security, financial security, positive images of aging, and healthy aging and wellness.

"I look forward to participating in the discussions and learning about some of the good work going on in other jurisdictions," Ross said. "A big part of my task as Legislative Secretary is to identify the needs of our seniors and the issues that they face, and this aligns nicely with that work.

"Our seniors are one of Saskatchewan's biggest assets and our government is developing a Seniors Care Strategy to ensure the appropriate programs and services are in place to support the future needs of our senior population."

As Legislative Secretary, Ms. Ross will be researching and engaging in stakeholder consultations focusing specifically on elder abuse, accessibility of personal care homes, falls prevention, home care supports and the feasibility of establishing a Seniors' Secretariat.
