MARTENSVILLE BECOMES SASKATCHEWAN’S 15TH CITY

Released on September 4, 2009

Premier Brad Wall, Municipal Affairs Minister Jeremy Harrison and Mayor Giles Saulnier today introduced Martensville as Saskatchewan's newest city.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is happy to welcome Martensville into the family of Saskatchewan cities," Wall said. "This is the first time since 1913 Saskatchewan has seen two towns become cities in the same year. With Meadow Lake on Monday and Martensville today, this is evidence that Saskatchewan is growing."

"As Minister of Municipal Affairs, I am honoured to play a role in this historic day for Martensville and for our province," Harrison said. "It is further evidence that Saskatchewan communities are moving forward."

Martensville was incorporated as a village in 1966 and became a town in 1969.

"We are very happy to be Saskatchewan's newest city," Saulnier said. "We are such a young community, only 40 years old, and we have accomplished so much, I can only imagine what the next 40 years will bring."

Martensville's city status will take effect on November 3 to coincide with the first council meeting after this fall's civic elections.

Meadow Lake was the last Saskatchewan town to be declared a city on August 31.

With the change in status of Martensville, there are now 15 cities in Saskatchewan, 145 towns, 266 villages, 40 resort villages, 296 rural municipalities, two northern towns, 11 northern villages and 12 northern hamlets.
