It has been more than three years since there has been a summer long weekend in Saskatchewan without a traffic fatality. This past August long weekend, one person was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Onion Lake First Nation.
With the Labour Day long weekend fast approaching, SGI is asking motorists to take care and caution while travelling.
"We want everyone to have a wonderful long weekend and enjoy time with family and friends," Minister responsible for SGI June Draude said. "Please travel safely and thank you for taking care out there."
Safe driving tips include planning a safe ride home by using a designated driver or taking a taxi if you have been drinking. It is also important to ensure that all passengers, especially children, have their seatbelts or child restraints properly secured.
On longer trips, SGI reminds drivers to allow enough travel time to reach your destination. This includes taking breaks to avoid fatigue or drowsiness.
