$1 MILLION FOR EMERGENCY YOUTH SHELTER IN REGINA

Released on October 30, 2009

High-risk youth in Regina will have greater access to emergency shelter, as well as skilled counsellors and case planning to help turn their lives around, as part of a new project made possible by $1 million in funding from the province.

Through the Ministry of Social Services and Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, the province will contribute $1 million in one-time capital funding for the construction of an emergency shelter that will serve up to 15 high-risk youth between the ages of 15 and 18. The new shelter will be operated by Street Culture Kidz Inc. of Regina, a community-based organization.

"Youth who are involved in street activity and do not have suitable housing desperately need the kind of emergency shelter and engagement with trained staff that this project will provide," Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said. "I'm confident that this project, which has been endorsed by the Regina Homelessness Committee, will make a huge difference in the community and in the lives of many young people in Regina's inner city."

In addition to the $1 million in capital funding, the province will also provide annual operational funding to Street Culture Kidz once the emergency shelter opens.

"Street Culture Kidz has actively consulted with the local community about this important new project for marginalized youth in Regina, and has strong community support," Street Culture Kidz CEO Kim Sutherland said. "Street Culture Kidz has been working with youth in need of services for 12 years, providing a variety of life-skills and employment readiness programs. Additionally, Street Culture is a safe haven for young people to access meal programs, enjoy recreational outings, and benefit from healthy social contact. We have the expertise and experience to make this new project a success, and are excited to work with many community partners."

Street Culture Kidz Inc. was selected to operate the new emergency youth shelter through a public expression-of-interest process.
