A Habitat for Humanity partner family in Regina will realize their dream of homeownership after receiving a key to their new house at a presentation today. The affordable housing project was undertaken by the Regina chapter of Habitat for Humanity, with $50,000 in funding from the province to offset construction costs.
The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced on March 30 to assist Habitat for Humanity's Saskatchewan affiliates provide 20 new homes for low-income Saskatchewan families in need of safe, affordable housing. The homes will be constructed in Yorkton, Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Lloydminster.
"This project, and other Habitat for Humanity affordable housing initiatives, is all about helping families build brighter futures for themselves," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer said. "Quality, affordable housing is a top priority for our government and we are pleased to partner with Habitat for Humanity to help achieve that goal."
"It is truly gratifying to work together with the province and all our partners to help a local family own their home," Habitat for Humanity CEO Dennis Coutts said. "Thanks to Saskatchewan Housing Corporation's funding, this process will repeat itself many times across the province and help provide families in need of assistance with more affordable housing choices."
The home is located at 1415 Athol Street in Regina. The partner family contributed more than 500 hours of sweat equity in building their home.
