CONSTRUCTION SET TO BEGIN ON STOBART COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Released on October 26, 2009

At a sod turning ceremony today, students, families and staff of Stobart Elementary Community School and Stobart Community High School joined Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz to celebrate the significant renovation and addition to Stobart Community School that when completed will house one PreK-12 facility.

"High quality school facilities that meet the needs of students and their families help to support student achievement," Krawetz said. "The new Stobart Community School will provide a safe, comfortable and attractive place for students to learn."

The new Stobart Community School will support programming for Pre-kindergarten through to Grade 12 with the inclusion of a 50 space childcare centre and community library. As well, elementary school students will have a mini-gym to support participation in sports and physical activity. A comfortable commons area and additional classroom space will also be included for students.

"The Prairie Spirit Board of Education welcomes the start of construction on the new school project in Duck Lake," Prairie Spirit Board of Education Chair Andrew Bergen said. "This new facility will be a tremendous benefit to all our students and to members of the Duck Lake community."

This school, which is expected to open in the fall of 2011, is being designed to accommodate 450 students with an expected opening day enrolment of 400 students. The school will cost approximately $19 million and will be cost shared with the Prairie Spirit School Division. The Government of Saskatchewan's estimated share is $13.5 million.

Over the past two years, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $303.4 million to move forward 22 major school capital projects including Stobart Community School, and more than 150 additional, smaller projects in schools across the province.
