2010 FORD WORLD WOMEN’S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP IN SWIFT CURRENT

Swift Current will make history from March 20 to 28, 2010, by hosting its first major international sporting event with the 2010 Ford World Women's Curling Championship.

The 2010 Ford World Women's Curling Championship will showcase the top curling teams from 12 countries.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to contribute $150,000 toward the costs of hosting this prestigious international event," Premier Brad Wall said. "This is an excellent opportunity to highlight Swift Current, our province and our facilities, while extending the warm Saskatchewan hospitality that we have become known for."

"Swift Current expects a sell-out of more than 60,000 attendees, which of course will provide tremendous economic input to our city," Swift Current Mayor Sandy Larson said. "To welcome the world, the City of Swift Current residents have invested a substantial amount of money into the Credit Union i-Plex facility and are confident that the curlers and fans will experience a first-class championship."

"The 2010 Ford World Women's Curling Championship Host Committee is delighted that the Government of Saskatchewan is partnering with our community to present this prestigious sporting event," Host Committee 2010 Ford World Women's Curling Championship Co-Chair Barbara Walter said. "This support from Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport will certainly help us to host a great curling competition and to showcase Swift Current and the Southwest."

Curling has a rich history in this province. Saskatchewan curlers that have been world female champions are:

1980 - Marj Mitchell, Nancy Kerr, Shirley McKendry, Wendy Leach (Regina)
1993, 1994, 1997 - Sandra Schmirler, Jan Betker, Joan McCusker, Marcia Gudereit (Regina)
