Olympic gold medalist Joan McCusker continued her Olympic Torch tour with a stop in North Battleford today.
McCusker is travelling to ‘celebration communities' to help them build excitement leading up to the Torch Relay and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
As a ‘celebration community' designated by the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee, North Battleford will host its own unique celebration on January 12, 2010, when the Olympic Flame stops there.
"The celebration in North Battleford will be incredible," McCusker said. "The community is so thrilled to host the Olympic Torch, and I am happy I can share in their excitement and their planning."
McCusker shared her gold medal memories and her passion for sports at a luncheon with the local Chamber of Commerce.
"Joan's enthusiasm is inspiring," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "She inspires people to get involved in sports, arts and cultural activities in their communities. She is a great ambassador for our province and the Olympic program."
For North Battleford, today is just the beginning of their Olympic celebrations.
"The community of North Battleford is excited to be one of the many communities to host the Olympic Torch Relay," North Battleford Olympic Torch Relay Committee Chair Laura Allan said. "The visit from Joan McCusker to speak at the Battleford Chamber of Commerce Spirit of Excellence awards is a natural partnership for the Olympic Torch Relay committee as Excellence in Service is directly related to Excellence in Sport - it's all about attitude."
The Government of Saskatchewan contributed $45,000 to each celebration community to help them host events around the Olympic Torch Relay and to plan a ‘legacy item' that will remain in the community long after the Torch has passed through.
In total, the Olympic Flame will travel more than 45,000 kilometres across Canada and visit every province and territory. For an interactive map of the route of the Olympic Torch Relay visit http://www.vancouver2010.com.
