The thrill of winning Gold is being shared in Lloydminster today by Olympic Gold Medalist Joan McCusker.
McCusker is in Lloydminster to help build excitement for the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.
The Vancouver Olympic Committee has designated Lloydminster as one of nine Saskatchewan "celebration communities". That means when the Olympic Torch stops in Lloydminster on January 12, the city will hold its own unique celebration.
McCusker is visiting each community to help build excitement leading up to the arrival of the Olympic Torch. To date she has been in Swift Current, Yorkton and La Ronge.
"Each community I have visited is showing a wonderful Olympic spirit," McCusker said. "The Olympic Torch is a great symbol of peace and friendship. It is clear that the people in Saskatchewan's Celebration Communities intend to show Canada and the world why we are so proud of our province."
Today Joan met with members of Lloydminster's Organizing Committee and spent time with the children from two of the city's schools.
"Joan is a great ambassador," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "Her enthusiasm and commitment to the Olympic spirit is inspiring. She is an inspiration to everyone who meets her."
The people of Lloydminster are getting excited about the arrival of the Olympic Torch.
"The Lloydminster torch relay committee is excited to be hosting one of the nine torch relay celebrations to kick off the 2010 Olympic Winter Games," Lloydminster 2010 Torch Relay Celebration Committee Chair Larry Sauer said. "The committee is busy organizing events that will be held before January 12 and during the January 12 celebration. They include mini torch relays in the schools, ice sculpting and a number of mini Olympic Games sports that will take place at Bud Miller Park January 12 before the formal Olympic flame celebration at seven p.m. There will also be a fireworks show at the end of the celebration."
The Government of Saskatchewan is contributing $45,000 to each celebration community to help them host events around the Olympic Torch Relay and to plan a ‘legacy item' that will remain in the community long after the Torch has passed through.
McCusker will continue to travel to the communities of North Battleford, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw in the next several weeks to meet with community officials and help build excitement.
In total, the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will travel 45,000 kilometres and visit every Canadian province and territory. For an interactive map of the route of the Olympic Torch Relay visit http://www.vancouver2010.com.
