Residents of the Resort Villages of Thode and Sheilds as well as the Town of Dundurn and the Rural Municipality of Dundurn are putting shovels in the ground today to launch construction of the Dundurn Wastewater Utility management system for the Blackstrap reservoir.
This project will improve local wastewater management services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.
"Today's announcement is just another example of the projects across our province and our country that are up and running thanks to Canada's Economic Action Plan," said Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "Jobs are being created and communities like Dundurn, Thode and Shields are seeing the benefits."
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan will each invest approximately $3 million toward the project. The Dundurn Wastewater Utility Board will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of slightly more than $9 million.
"The province continues to work in partnership with municipalities and the federal government to make infrastructure a priority in Saskatchewan," Municipal Affairs Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "This extensive wastewater management system in the Dundurn area exemplifies the long-term benefits of a regional approach toward sustainable and critical infrastructure."
"These are indeed exciting times in our communities," Dundurn and Area Wastewater Utility Chairman Fred Wilson said. "The project will enhance the opportunities for expansion within the Town of Dundurn, and the Resort Villages of Shields and Thode. The financial assistance of the Building Canada Fund made this project an affordable reality which will play a major part in the planning for the future."
This project is one of 145 projects across the province breaking ground quickly thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of $223.4 million. Together with municipal contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in Saskatchewan under the Building Canada Fund - Communities Component exceeds $335 million. This project demonstrates how the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are getting shovels in the ground quickly for targeted infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
