Approximately $2 million in federal and provincial funds will help create 20 new affordable housing units for low-income families in La Ronge.
The announcement was made by Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River, on behalf of Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and First Nations and Métis Relations Minister Bill Hutchinson, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.
"The Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing available in Saskatchewan and across Canada for those who need it most," said Clarke. "The La Ronge Aurora Pines project and the Northern Teacher Education Program project are helping low-income families access safe and suitable housing, and build a stronger future for themselves."
"The need for affordable housing exists in northern Saskatchewan communities such as La Ronge as well as in larger communities," Hutchinson said. "Projects like these will help create more housing options as well as build lasting, sustainable northern communities."
The first project, La Ronge Aurora Pines, will be a 12-unit complex for families consisting of six two-bedroom and six three-bedroom units. The total project cost is estimated to be $2 million. Together, CMHC and Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) contributed approximately $1.1 million to the project. The remaining funding will be provided by local developers.
The second project will consist of eight family apartments (six four-bedroom and two five-bedroom units) for Northern Teachers Education Program (NORTEP) students. The $2 million project will be developed and managed by NORTEP. Together, SHC and CMHC provided $768,000, with an additional $315,000 provided by the province through the Northern Development Agreement. The remaining funding will be provided by the project sponsor from mortgage financing and sponsor contributions. The project is designed to meet the demand for affordable housing for larger families in the community.
Both projects are expected to be completed in spring 2010.
In Saskatchewan, the amendment to the Canada-Saskatchewan Affordable Housing Program Agreement, which included funding under Canada's Economic Action Plan signed in May 2009, brought federal housing support of $74 million to Saskatchewan. The Government of Saskatchewan will match that commitment for a total of $148 million to go to the renovation of existing social housing and development of new affordable housing in Saskatchewan by 2011.
