NORTHERN SCHOOL DIVISIONS JOIN FORCES TO INCREASE ABORIGINAL EMPLOYMENT

Released on October 15, 2009

Saskatchewan's three northern school divisions, with a workforce of 789 strong, agreed to take steps to increase Aboriginal participation in their workplaces at a ceremony in Prince Albert this afternoon.

First Nations and Métis Relations Minister Bill Hutchinson met with representatives from the Saskatchewan School Boards Association, Northern Lights School Division, Creighton School Division and Ile-a-la-Crosse School Division to sign an Aboriginal Employment Development partnership agreement.

"This partnership with the three northern school divisions is a tremendous opportunity to increase jobs for Aboriginal people in or near their home communities," Hutchinson said. "The partnership will help create a workforce that is more representative of the province's northern population."

"The pillars of the Representative Workforce Strategy are employment, education and training, and economic development," Saskatchewan School Boards Association President Roy Challis said. "This strategy will help to advance cultural awareness and create role models for the future leaders of Saskatchewan's North."

"The division is proud of its efforts to hire Aboriginal staff," Ile-a-la-Crosse Director of Education Lon Borgerson said. "This signing represents our continued commitment to employing Métis and First Nations people in our school division."

"We are signing this agreement because we believe it will lead to improved student success," Creighton School Division Director of Education Robert Bratvold said. "We know that by creating a more attractive place of employment for First Nations and Métis people we will enable employees and families to be more successful in their work with students."

"The partnership is part of the division's efforts to ensure the best quality of education and providing the best possible opportunities for the children of northern Saskatchewan," Northern Lights School Division School Board Trustee Chairperson Frank Durocher said.

Saskatchewan's Aboriginal Employment Development initiative is focused on bringing the largely untapped First Nations and Métis workforce into the province's growing economy. All Aboriginal Employment Development partners work to identify and address barriers to training, hiring and retaining First Nations and Métis people.
