REVIEW RECOMMENDS SEPARATE UNION BARGAINING AT SASKATCHEWAN UNIVERSITIES

Released on October 8, 2009

The Saskatchewan Government has accepted the findings of an independent report recommending changes to the current collective bargaining structure at the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina.

The review concluded that joint collective bargaining between the universities and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) be repealed, and replaced with a process allowing CUPE locals 1975 and 1975-01 to bargain separately with the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina, respectively.

"The report found that the joint bargaining process was no longer beneficial to our universities nor to the separate interests of the employees," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "This change will enable the parties to negotiate collective agreements that address the concerns of both employees and the universities in a more effective manner."

The review was conducted by lawyer Richard Hornung, Q.C., after extensive consultations with both universities and union representatives.

The changes will become effective in time for the next round of collective bargaining at both universities.
