ANTLERLESS ELK HUNTING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CYPRESS HILLS AREA

Released on October 6, 2009

After this year's Big Game Draw, 260 elk licences remain unsold. These licences will now be offered to Saskatchewan residents who would like to hunt antlerless elk in the Cypress Hills area, starting October 15.

The licences are available for $53.97 each by calling 306-778-8204, beginning at 8 a.m. on October 15, 2009. There is a limit of four licences per telephone call. If you are phoning on behalf of another hunter, please ensure you have the required information (name, address, Saskatchewan health services number and birthdate). In-person orders will not be accepted. To purchase one of these licences, hunters must be Saskatchewan residents and possess a valid 2009 Wildlife Habitat Certificate.

Hunters who already hold a special elk licence obtained through the Big Game Draw or who have a regular elk licence are not eligible to purchase one of these licences.

The hunting season for antlerless elk for Wildlife Management Zone 6 and that portion of Zone 7 located east of Highway 271 and Grid Road 615 is open from October 15 to December 19, 2009, and from January 5 to February 28, 2010.

Please note that the Bear-Piapot and Birch-Maple Grazing Co-op pastures will remain closed until November 1, 2009. Cypress Hills Provincial Park (Centre Block) is closed to all hunting and all firearms must be encased while travelling within the park boundaries.

Hunters are encouraged to turn elk heads in to any Ministry of Environment office for Chronic Wasting Disease testing.
