PROCESSING CROWN TIMBER WITHOUT LICENCE COSTS COMPANY AND OWNER $6,300

Released on October 5, 2009

Chisum Log Homes and Lumber Ltd. and owner Garry Varga were found guilty of one count each under The Forest Resources Management Act and were fined a total of $6,300 in Prince Albert Provincial Court on October 2, 2009. The company is also prohibited from further processing any Crown timber without first obtaining a Processing Licence.

The charges were laid as the result of a joint investigation initiated by the Ministry of Environment conservation and forestry officers in July 2007. It was determined that Chisum Log Homes and Lumber Ltd. and Garry Varga were legally obtaining wood from another supplier but were processing the product without a Processing Facility Licence. The province requires Processing Facility Licenses to ensure: wood waste management plans to protect the environment are in place; mills are keeping required records; and that all wood being processed was legally taken.

"Saskatchewan's forests play an important role in the province's environment and economy," Ministry of Environment Compliance and Field Services Executive Director Kevin Callele said. "Unfortunately, there are some who break the laws designed to protect our forests. This court case sends the message that Saskatchewan's forestry resources are valued and will be protected."

Anyone who is aware of or suspects forestry, wildlife, fisheries or environmental violations is encouraged to report them to the nearest Ministry of Environment office or to call the province's toll-free Turn In Poachers (TIP) line at 1-800-667-7561or #5555 for SaskTel cell phone subscribers.
