Olympic Gold Medalist Joan McCusker shared her gold memories with students and community members in Yorkton today.
McCusker is travelling across the province to build excitement for the upcoming Torch Relay and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Yorkton is one of nine ‘celebration communities' designated by the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee. That means Yorkton will host its own unique celebration on January 9, 2010, when the Olympic Flame stops there.
"I have the best job in the world," McCusker said. "Being able to share my gold medal with these communities allows me to relive my Olympic experience. And help them create their own Olympic memories while hosting the Olympic Torch Relay is incredible."
Yorkton kicked off two days of events today, 100 days prior to their torch relay celebration on January 9, with a mini torch relay from school to school, followed by a flag raising at City Hall. In the afternoon, McCusker spoke to more than 1,000 Grades 4-8 elementary school students.
"Joan's enthusiasm for everything she does is an inspiration to young people and adults alike," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "She is a great ambassador for our province, and the Olympic program."
For Yorkton, today is just the beginning of the celebrations.
"Yorkton residents are thrilled to be included in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay as a celebration host community," Yorkton Torch Run Committee Chairperson Randy Goulden said. "The Torch will be welcomed with a celebration of dance, song and fun. The creation of a community art piece will provide a lasting memory of the Olympic Torch Relay in Yorkton."
The Government of Saskatchewan is contributing $45,000 to each celebration community to help them host events around the Olympic Torch Relay and to plan a ‘legacy item' that will remain in the community long after the Torch has passed through.
McCusker will continue to travel to the celebration communities in the next several weeks to meet with community officials and build excitement.
In total, the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will travel 45,000 kilometres and visit every Canadian province and territory. For an interactive map of the route of the Olympic Torch Relay visit http://www.vancouver2010.com.
