REPAIRS TO THEODORE DAM COMPLETED

Released on November 30, 2009

With work that had been initiated in late August, emergency repairs to the Theodore Dam are now complete, staving off the threat of dam failure. To enable the repairs to be made, the water level on Theodore Reservoir was drawn down approximately 1.5 metres.

"With the repairs completed, normal operations of the dam have resumed, and water levels in Theodore Reservoir are beginning to come back up," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Nancy Heppner said. "We will continue working throughout the winter to monitor water quality and protect fish populations in the reservoir."

This past spring, a safety inspection conducted by the Watershed Authority revealed that the dam required immediate corrective action to stabilize the earthfill adjacent to the concrete spillway. Without this work, the safety of the dam and spillway would have been severely compromised.

"While lowering the water was certainly an inconvenience to recreational users, we sincerely appreciate their patience and understanding over the past months," Heppner said. "Water levels are expected to return to normal by next spring."

The Watershed Authority will continue to monitor water quality and potential negative impacts on fish populations due to the reservoir drawdown. The Watershed Authority will also operate aeration systems in the reservoir over the winter to reduce the likelihood of a fish kill due to low oxygen levels in the water.

Operation of these aeration systems will result in thin ice conditions and areas of open water on Theodore Reservoir throughout the winter months. Ice fishers, snowmobilers, and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts should exercise caution when using the reservoir during this period. Signs, buoys and orange snow fence will be used to identify the areas of open water and thin ice.
