CELEBRATING THE OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on November 26, 2009

Lighting The Way

The Government of Saskatchewan hosted the province's 2010 Olympic Torch Relay cauldron lighters and Torch Relay community planning representatives at the Legislature today to celebrate Saskatchewan's Olympic spirit.

The Olympic flame first arrived in Saskatchewan in La Ronge on November 7, 2009, as it crossed northern Canada west to east by air. It will return January 9, 2010, on its trek west, stopping first in Yorkton and departing the province from Lloydminster.

"The people of Saskatchewan, along with the friends and family of each cauldron lighter and torchbearer are so incredibly proud," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "The Saskatchewan spirit will continue to shine as the flame makes its way across our great province."

As the Olympic flame passes through Saskatchewan it will stop in nine communities that have been designated as celebration communities by the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC). The nine designated communities and the dates of their celebrations are:

• La Ronge - November 7, 2009
• Yorkton and Regina - January 9, 2010
• Moose Jaw and Swift Current - January 10, 2010
• Saskatoon and Prince Albert - January 11, 2010
• North Battleford and Lloydminster - January 12, 2010

The Olympic Torch has already stopped in Saskatchewan. It was used to light the cauldron in La Ronge.

"To run through a packed crowd, to hear mass cheering, to turn on stage and see everyone waiting for the Olympic flame made me proud in a way that I just can't describe," La Ronge's cauldron lighter Natasha Boyes said. "The Olympic flame is coming back to inspire Saskatchewan soon and whether it's for hockey, curling, skiing or biathlon, we're all going to be cheering, 'Go Canada'."

Each celebration community received a $45,000 grant from the province to help plan and cover the cost of its own unique celebration and activities around the Olympic Torch Relay and to help with a legacy project.

In total, the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will travel 45,000 kilometres and visit every Canadian province and territory. The Olympic flame started in Victoria on October 30 and travelled east. It is now on its way back west and will arrive in Vancouver on February 12, 2010. At Vancouver's BC Place it will be used to light the Olympic Cauldron, signalling the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
