From Many Peoples Strength reflects our character and future
The province is celebrating our diversity by proclaiming November 22 to 29 as Multicultural Week in Saskatchewan.
"Our growing diversity reflects our compassion, capacity and desire to welcome newcomers as well as our understanding of the value that we as a province gain from being inclusive of different perspectives and experiences," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "I encourage all people to note the week and celebrate that which we bring from our different heritages is what goes into making us one people with common values and shared dreams."
Saskatchewan was the first province to enact multiculturalism legislation, recognizing the right of every community to retain its identity, language and traditional arts and sciences for the mutual benefit of all citizens. The province's commitment to multiculturalism is reflected in its motto, Multis e gentibus vires - From Many Peoples Strength.
Each November the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan (MCoS) recognizes the anniversary of the legislation to celebrate this progressive act. MCoS is committed to promoting, fostering, improving and developing multiculturalism in the economic, cultural and political life of Saskatchewan, while working to achieve equality of all residents.
"We can be proud of the 1974 Saskatchewan legislation, and the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan believes that education and interaction are key to better understanding and positive cross-cultural relations," MCoS Executive Director Rhonda Rosenberg said. "We encourage all Saskatchewan residents to learn more about their own and the heritage of others. Discover... share... cultivate respect."
In support of this goal, MCoS has created an information sheet and quiz titled Ways to Welcome Saskatchewan Multicultural Week. These will be sent to all schools in the province. Copies are available through the Council office. These and other activities are possible through the support of Saskatchewan Lotteries.
"We are starting a new generation and they are going to be all over the world and right now we are lucky because the world is coming to Saskatchewan," MCoS Board Member and retired English as an Additional Language teacher Joyce Vandall said.
