The Saskatchewan government is partnering with Alberta to use web-enabled technology in order to help transform the way it does business with the province's oil and gas industry.
Saskatchewan is now part of the Petroleum Registry of Alberta, thanks to a Memorandum of Agreement signed recently with the Alberta government. Participation in the seven year-old registry is a key part of the government's multi-year renewal of its information technology systems around oil and gas business processes.
"This registry is a web-enabled, interactive data base that has been well accepted by the oil and gas industry in western Canada," Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd said. "Companies operating throughout western Canada are excited about us being a full partner in the registry, and we'll be working to adapt registry processes to the specific needs of companies operating in Saskatchewan."
The registry has proven effective in allowing industry to quickly record petroleum and natural gas volumetric and infrastructure data into a central database. This information can be used as an analytical tool by industry and government, and the information collected in turn helps government in administration of its royalty and tax regimes.
Boyd said the online registry will improve client service by replacing significant components of older business systems that track oil and gas well information, production and disposition reporting and also supplement and enhance oil and gas royalty/tax billing.
"Our oil and gas industry appreciates Saskatchewan's competitive and stable business climate," Boyd said. "We are now offering companies even more with technology that's been proven and accepted by the industry and which gives them the opportunity to do business more easily across the West."
"The registry was established to ensure stakeholders have centralized access to safe, accurate, comprehensive, and timely petroleum-related information," Alberta Energy Minister Mel Knight said. "This co-operative effort is an important step toward increased regulatory efficiency that will allow industry to do what it does best - responsible development of our natural resources for the benefit of all Canadians."
