Today, Saskatchewan welcomed a new industry-led recycling program that will make it even easier for people across the country to recycle their old cellphones.
Legislative Secretary on Recycling to the Minister of Environment Greg Ottenbreit joined in launching the Saskatchewan campaign of Recycle My Cell led by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA).
The program incorporates existing cellphone recycling initiatives across the country and helps users find out where and how to properly dispose of their old cellphones and other wireless devices - regardless of carrier, brand or condition - at www.recyclemycell.ca.
"We encourage Saskatchewan residents to take advantage of this recycling program," Ottenbreit said. "Don't throw old cellphones away. Do your part in keeping toxic waste out of Saskatchewan landfills."
"Today's official recognition of the Recycle My Cell program is a testament to Saskatchewan's commitment to reducing waste," CWTA President and CEO Bernard Lord said. "On behalf of the industry, I extend our appreciation to the Government of Saskatchewan for recognizing the wireless industry's commitment to the environment as well."
Recycle My Cell builds on local programs such as SaskTel's Phones for a Fresh Start. Now the province will have 95 locations in 28 communities where cellphones and wireless devices (batteries and chargers) can be dropped off for recycling for free. Visitors to www.recyclemycell.ca can enter their postal code and get a list of the 10 nearest recycling depots.
Used cell devices can be dropped off at designated points or sent by mail free of charge from any Canada Post outlet. They are then sent to a recycling plant to be refurbished or taken apart for processing. Proceeds from the sale of refurbished phones and scrap materials are donated to local charities.
