Martensville and Meadow Lake officially became Saskatchewan's 14th and 15th cities following municipal elections held last week.
"This is the first time since 1913 Saskatchewan has seen two towns become cities in the same year," Municipal Affairs Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "With Meadow Lake changing status yesterday and Martensville last week, this is evidence that Saskatchewan is moving forward."
To receive city status a community must have a population of 5,000 or more. According to the 2006 census, the two communities were below the 5,000 population threshold to be declared a city. However, with significant growth in the past three years the town councils and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs were confident that the population had reached the required level.
Martensville was incorporated as a village in 1966 and became a town in 1968. Meadow Lake was incorporated as a village in 1931 and became a town in 1936.
Meadow Lake's city status took effect yesterday following the first council meeting after this fall's civic elections. Martensville's city status became official at its last council meeting held November 3.
There are now 15 cities in Saskatchewan, 145 towns, 266 villages, 40 resort villages, 296 rural municipalities, two northern towns, 11 northern villages and 11 northern hamlets.
