HONOURING CADETS IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on November 5, 2009

Today Provincial Secretary June Draude and Military Liaison for the Province of Saskatchewan D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert announced a new program to recognize excellence in Saskatchewan Cadets corps.

"We are committed to honouring the contributions and achievements of those citizens that make Saskatchewan the best province in Canada," Draude said. "This is especially true of the young people in our province. This is a group of young people most worthy of formal recognition."

Each year the top Air Cadet Squadron, Army Cadet Corps and Sea Cadets Corps will be formally recognized for the contributions they make to our communities at an event on the first Saturday in November, beginning in 2010.

"This program reflects our government's commitment to investing in today's youth as well as Saskatchewan's future," Huyghebaert said. "The program will recognize recipients that illustrate discipline, leadership and civic responsibility in their everyday lives."

The Cadet program in Saskatchewan began in 1903 and includes 63 Air, Army and Sea corps and squadrons and more than 2,000 cadets. The program accepts youth between the ages of 12 to 19, and teaches citizenship, personal discipline as well as general military knowledge.
