Today, Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz proclaimed November 2 to 6, 2009 as Paralympic School Week in Saskatchewan.
In celebration of Paralympic School Week, the Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association, the Regina Catholic School Board, the Regina Pats and Evraz Place demonstrated a game of ice sledge hockey at the Brandt Centre, Evraz Place in Regina.
Sledge hockey is an adapted version of ice hockey, where players sit on aluminium or steel sledges fitted with two blades. Players use two double-ended sticks to propel the sledge, as well as to pass and shoot the puck.
"The Government of Saskatchewan is excited to proclaim this week as Paralympic School Week in our province," Krawetz said. "Enthusiasm for physical activity motivates students and encourages them to become more active and embrace a healthier lifestyle."
Paralympic School Week focuses on the value of equality and the importance of access and inclusion in all areas of life. The goal of this week is to build awareness of the Paralympic Games among students and educators and to recognize athletes with disabilities and their engagement in sport and physical activity.
