The Saskatoon Prairieland Park Corporation (SPPC) is receiving $986,000 in funding from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority in support of thoroughbred horse racing at Marquis Downs.
"The funding is part of our government's commitment to thoroughbred racing in the province," Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority Dan D'Autremont said. "Thoroughbred racing has a proud 40-year history at Marquis Downs and continues to grow in popularity and creates positive economic spinoffs in the community."
Funding for SPPC includes $931,000 for track operations to support 30 days of thoroughbred racing. As well, an additional $55,000 will be provided in support of facility upgrades at Marquis Downs.
Marquis Downs Manager of Racing Rick Fior said the funding will help continue an important tradition in Saskatoon.
"We're very appreciative of the funding provided by government," Fior said. "We're looking forward to an exciting race season for our fans and competitors. Funding for facility improvements will ensure that interest in horse racing continues to grow."
Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority is also providing funding for two days of speed horse racing in Melville this year. The Melville Agri-Park Association will receive $28,000 for the operation of racing and an additional $4,000 in facility grants.
Thoroughbred season kicks off tonight with racing at Marquis Downs. Post time is 7:05 p.m.
