Horse racing tracks in Yorkton and Saskatoon are receiving $479,000 from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority to support standardbred racing.
"The funding is part of our government's commitment to the standardbred harness racing industry," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority Dan D'Autremont said. "Standardbred racing continues to grow in popularity in Saskatchewan and is having a positive economic impact on the communities where it's held."
The funding includes $165,000 for the Saskatoon Prairieland Park Corporation which will have eight days of standardbred racing at Marquis Downs. As well, an additional $55,000 is being provided for facility upgrades.
The Yorkton Exhibition Association (YEA) will receive $224,000 in support of 16 days of standardbred racing and an additional $35,000 for facility upgrades.
YEA President Penny Sandercock said the grants will help to attract more people to the race track this year.
"Harness racing continues to bring visitors to our community each and every week enhancing tourism in the Parkland," Sandercock said. "The enthusiasm continues to build as fans get to know the owners, drivers and their favourite horses."
