Re-enactment concert will highlight Music Festival Week in Saskatchewan
Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell has proclaimed the week of May 18 - 24, 2009, as Music Festival Week in Saskatchewan in recognition of the activities of the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association and local associations throughout the province.
"I am pleased to proclaim this week in recognition of 100 years of music festivals in Saskatchewan and the on-going role the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association plays in the cultural life of our province," Tell said. "It says a lot about who we are and what music and music education means in our communities, and all that it contributes to the rich quality of life in the province."
The week marks the 100th anniversary of the first provincial music festival concert held in Regina. A re-enactment of that concert will take place on May 24, 2009, at St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral in Regina. It will feature music from the original 1909 musical program along with a newly commissioned work by Saskatchewan composer Elizabeth Raum.
The Saskatchewan Music Festival Association holds 49 district festivals across the province from March to early May. Approximately 20,000 musicians take part along with 120 adjudicators and upwards of 4,000 volunteers. To honour this ongoing heritage, the Government of Saskatchewan is providing $87,610 through the province's Building Pride program to be distributed to the district festival units for local events and the establishment of scholarships, as well as for the Centennial Re-enactment Concert.
"Music Festival Week is part of a year-long celebration which marked the founding of the provincial association on May 28, 1908, and the first provincial music festival concert held a year later on May 26, 1909," Saskatchewan Music Festival Association executive director Carol Donhauser said. "We will wrap-up our centenary activities in August when Saskatoon hosts the National Music Festival in Saskatoon."
Some of the events related to Music Festival Week are being funded through the Building Pride program. With an annual allocation of $750,000, Building Pride helps organizations and municipalities celebrate significant milestones and one-time legacy initiatives.
