PROVINCE CONTINUES TO TAKE ACTION ON CHILD WELFARE

Released on May 12, 2009

The Government of Saskatchewan today announced an investment of $4 million in Eagle's Nest Youth Ranch Inc. to provide 20 new spaces for at-risk youth in the Saskatoon area.

The lack of youth care spaces has been a serious gap in the care continuum in Saskatoon, and this important project aims to help alleviate the problem of overcrowding, identified by the Children's Advocate's recent report.

"Addressing the critical shortage of appropriate care spaces for youth in the Saskatoon region is an important part of our government's plan announced in February," Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said. "Eagle's Nest is one of the finest providers of residential youth services in the province, and this partnership will provide much-needed additional space to support at-risk youth in the Saskatoon area."

A $2 million capital grant will enable Eagle's Nest, currently based in Prince Albert, to expand its services to Saskatoon and purchase property and necessary furnishings. The agency will also receive $2 million in annual operating funding to provide 11 short term emergency receiving beds and nine assessment and stabilization beds to assist some of Saskatoon's most vulnerable adolescents.

"Our agency is very pleased to partner with Social Services to increase the capacity of the Saskatoon community to respond to child welfare challenges," Eagle's Nest Youth Ranch Executive Director Susan Luedtke said. "We have developed a strong partnership with the ministry in Prince Albert, and look forward to working to develop services in Saskatoon that will improve the well being of children and youth in care."

"Today's announcement demonstrates our government's commitment to putting children and youth first, and ensuring a better quality of life for the young people of Saskatchewan," Harpauer said.

Eagle's Nest currently provides 46 spaces for youth in the Prince Albert area. It is expected the 20 spaces in Saskatoon will be available in June 2009.
